In 2009 the department of mechanical engineering at McGill University was doing research on lunar mobility. The professor in charge of the project had seen me building one of my bikes and questioned me on the strength and rigidity of it. I showed him the FEA that I had performed on the frame. He then hired me to do some complex finite element modeling and analysis on some prototype lunar wheels. This eventually turned into a full on research project that was funded by the Canadian Space Agency. The model of the wheel was presented to the CSA and many of its design components have been retained for the next lunar rover wheels.
