FIVE ONE FIXED

After being unable to complete the JOEKING bike, I felt the need to pursue the idea. It had also been quite a while since I had made a frame for myself. I therefore decided to expand on the Joe King bike style and created the Five One Fixed frame.

Design

This frame was based on the JOEKING frame with one main addition: the ability to interchange the downtube plate. This was accomplished through the use of 3 bolts to link the plate to the frame. The size of the frame was also custom fitted to my stature. The interchangeable plates have limitless abilities (black board, white board, company logo, LCD Screen etc…).

Material

The original design called for the entire frame to be made of aluminum. Cyclical stress on an aluminum frame tends to make it weaker and require bulkier looking tubes; therefore the use of chromoly steel was preferred. This however encompassed a new challenge; the weight of a steel downtube plate would be very uncomfortable for any rider to do tricks on, therefore the downplates were made of 6061 aluminum.

Manufacturing

This was the most labour intensive construction I had ever done. One of the downtubes was milled by hand, and another was CNC’d. The integrated headtube was custom made and so were the drop outs. Mastercam is no ones friend...
